Genetic Testing! What the Het?

MorphMarket is excited to bring you a new technology that is going to change the industry: genetic testing for your animals to determine their sex, genetic traits, and other characteristics.

Rare Genetics Inc. (RGI) is a new company that has developed genetic tests for reptiles that are reliable and affordable. These tests from RGI will be available for purchase through MorphMarket in a matter of weeks.

With a small piece of shed from your reptile, RGI's tests can tell you if the reptile is male or female, or if it contains certain morphs. This means you can prove out your possible het animals without taking years to grow them up and breed them. It can also confirm incomplete dominant traits such as Asphalt/Gravel/Yellow Belly.

When is this useful?

  • Test your offspring so you can sell them as 100% Het instead of Pos Het
  • Test the animals you buy to verify they were accurately advertised
  • Test your breeders to find out if they have genes you didn't even know about
  • Test your pet to know if it's a boy or girl

Join the Waiting List now to be first in line for this service and receive updates on its availability!

As of today tests already developed include:

  • Ball Pythons: Morph Identification for Clown, Piebald, and Lavender Albino
  • Ball Pythons: Sex Determination
  • Colubrids: Sex Determination
  • Venomous: Sex Determination

3-5 additional Ball Python morph tests are planned to be added in the next few weeks, with more to come every month.

RGI has sold these tests in the past in limited supply, but moving forward they will no longer be selling directly to the public. These tests will be available through MorphMarket. Click here to get updates and early access.

NFS Collections

NFS Collections is a new animal management feature on MorphMarket which enables you to showcase your Not For Sale (NFS) animals. This is a great way to show off the breeding stock you are working with.

Previously, a few examples from your collection were shown on the Store page. Now, prospective buyers can browse your ENTIRE collection by clicking on the "View Collection" link in the Collection section of the Store page.

The Collection page provides some basic filtering and sorting options with more to come. You can also restrict which animals show up here by adjusting their visibility to Private or Unlisted. Unlisted animals can be seen but only by a direct link. Private animals can only be accessed by the seller.

NFS Animal visibility also depends on your Membership level. Basic members can showcase adults. Standard members can also showcase subadults. Higher memberships includes babies. These limits help to prevent the use of this feature to sell these animals.

However, this limitation did not sit well with us because we wanted all members to be able to share their entire collection with friends, including holdbacks. To allow this, we created a special link which you can obtain by using the Share button on this page. When you post this link into social media, anyone who clicks it will see all of your public animals.

Now let's see those beautiful breeders! Check out Ken Simpson's collection.

Export & Other Updates

While working on other big projects, we have also made improvements to export and other features.

Now you can Export various slices of your data. Previously the Export function on the Animal Manager would output all animals in your active collection, such as those For Sale and Not For Sale. Now, Export will output all of the animals currently displayed on your Animal Manager page. This means you can export any subset of your Animal data present or past. For example, you could export Sold animals with any set of filters by genetics, maturity, etc.

Other updates:

  • Share button now includes Copy Link in addition to Facebook. This means you can get a link to your Listing, Store Page, Offspring Group, an Expo and post it anywhere.
  • Index Polish
    • Default sort now only puts subcategories at the top, and localities are mixed in with other traits
    • Clear button to more quickly select subsets of traits
    • Inclusion of stats previously displayed, now under the (i) icon
  • Expanded Image Support
    • HEIC images now supported
    • Imported photo URLs can be from Google Drive
    • Imported photos get downloaded faster, within minutes instead of every hour
  • More fixes for the old App in preparation for our App-store Apps

At the same time, we continue working on bigger features!

MorphMarket’s Index Page is where you can explore animals by trait, such as by gene or locality.

We've rolled out a new version as part of our platform redesign.

It does everything the old version did PLUS:

  • Search, filter & sort traits
  • Photo thumbnails
  • Clear labeling of the type of trait such as it being a Locality
  • The ability to see ALL traits in the system even if no ads are listed
  • Trait combos list all the traits in the combo
  • And of course a fresh, professional look

The demo below shows these features.

Try it out by visiting any category from the home page. For example Ball Pythons.

To make requests for additions or changes to the listed traits, visit this page.

UPDATE 7/18: New default view mode which is compact like the old one, and all items on a single page. Some more refinements still to come.

Notification Settings

In preparation for our Mobile App and mobile notifications, we've created a Notification Settings page. This feature, while boring, is increasingly important as there become more things you can be notified about as well as multiple channels that you can be notified by. We don't want to spam you!

Find these under Settings > Manage Notifications.

For example, now you can disable various kinds of emails our site sends:

  • If you exclusively want to use the Messenger, you could disable the Email channel for All Messages and New Inquiry.
  • If you don't care to receive the email prompting you to leave feedback or ratings for sellers, you can disable this.
  • If you a seller who doesn't want to be reminded about inquiries our system didn't see a response to, you can disable those. We don't recommend this.

The exciting part are the settings for some upcoming features which are not yet available, as indicated by the *. This includes all the mobile notifications, as well as the notification for hits on Saved Searches and from those you're Following.

Animal Management for Everyone!

We are excited to announce that MorphMarket's new Animal Management capabilities are now available to all our users for FREE. Before, this was only available to sellers. Now, everyone can manage records for up to 50 animals without the need to create a Store account.

Animal Management enables you to privately track the details your entire collection including photos, traits, date of birth, private notes and more. It also includes Offspring Groups which record the lineage of all your clutches and litters, as well as the Dashboard and Import/Export features. You can also use Tags to organize your animals in custom groups. In the future, you'll be able to transfer purchased animals into your collection.

There will still be plenty of additional benefits for our supporting members who are making this technology possible and helping elevate our industry. But all animal lovers and aspiring breeders can begin using these tools today to track their animals. When logged in, you will find an “Animals” link in the header on the website and in the menu.

Here are some short videos which highlight these capabilities:

Custom Animal Tags

Custom Tags is a new feature for MorphMarket's Animal Manager. These are also known as Labels by some other tools like Gmail.

What are tags for?

  • Create tags according to your own needs.
  • Group & organize animals in your collection.
  • Assign them to one or more animals at once with bulk assignment.
  • Filter/Search your animals by tags.
  • Tags are private so no one else sees them.

To access tags, click on the "Tag" column in your Animal Manager. It's probably near the far right. If that is not displayed, click the button to change your column preferences. From the tag modal, you can click "manage tags" to see all of the ones you've created and rename or delete them.

We love this feature because it's flexible and can be customized to your own needs and tastes.

How would you use this to organize your collection?

Offspring Groups is a new animal management feature on MorphMarket which enables breeders to track and showcase the lineage of their reptiles' clutches and litters.

As a breeder, this is useful for record keeping year over year. In addition to tracking lineage, it records which females were bred and their productivity. These animals can also be easily converted to listing for sale later.

Offspring Groups are also useful to prospective customers who can see photos and details of an animals parents and siblings. This gallery allows a breeder's experience to speak for itself.

This functionality was previously only available to a handful of elite breeders with custom websites. Now the ability to track and showcase your breeding history is accessible to thousands of breeder across the world at no additional cost.

Store QR Codes

We've generated a unique QR Code for your Store Page. You can download your QR code at the bottom of your store profile page (menu -> Seller Profile). This will take someone directly to your page without them having to fumble with URLs or searching.

In case you've been living under a rock, a QR code is a 2-dimensional barcode which users can scan with their phone to take them to a page. They've become especially popular in the post-Covid world for contactless interfaces for things like restaurant menus.

A neat feature about our QR codes is that you can customize where the QR code goes. So far there are two options: It can go to your store page OR directly to your listings.

Where would you use these? Anywhere you want to promote your brand and products.

Some ideas:

  • Stickers: imagine your customers slapping these on their tub, incubators or water bottles, and being able to immediately access your animals for sale whenever they are reminded of you. Here's a QR sticker printing service.
  • At your expo booth setup, on a banner or just a sheet of paper on the table.
  • Shirts, and other merch.

As a bonus we have now provided easy access to high resolution MorphMarket logos in case you want to use these in your materials. We have had users put these on business cards, shirts, expo setups and even vehicle wraps!

We are committed to providing you as a breeder the full range of products and services for your business or hobby.

Bulk import is a capability which allows you to create and manage hundreds of animal entries with very little effort. This is a great way to upload your entire not-for-sale collection to the Animal Manager. You do not need to use import to be an effective MorphMarket user, but for those who want more hands-on control this is a useful feature.

We announced the beta version of Bulk Import 2.0 last May, but since then we have made a number of fixes and added a complimentary Export 2.0. Version 2 is a powerful upgrade from the original that supports:

  • More than two dozen fields including description, multiple photos, and status
  • Managing animals in different categories at the same time
  • Overriding animal traits automatically extracted from the ad title
  • Importing large datasets which are processed in the background

Export has also been upgraded to include all of the same fields which Import supports, along with a few extras such as engagement metrics. In fact, for the first time you can now export your Collection, modify some values, and Import it again.

You can still utilize the older Import 1.0 format for a limited time, but you will need to follow the link on the import page to this legacy page. This video and our documentation provide useful information in those transitioning from version 1 to 2.
