Announcing Breeding Plans!

Breeding Plans will help you plan, track, and promote your projects.

  • Experiment with pairings and visualize possible outcomes
  • View expected combined outcomes for your entire season
  • Share projects, expectations and results with the community

You can access the Breeding Manager using the "Breeding" item on the menu or the beaker icon.

The basic steps are as follows:

  1. Add your not-for-sale breeding animals to your collection if you haven't already done so.
  2. Activate the breeding adults which you want to work with this season.
  3. Pair up male to females or females to males.

After creating pairings, you can do things like:

  • View the combined outcomes which are possible from all the pairings using the "Outcomes" button.
  • Share individual pairings by setting their visibility to public. These will show up in the MorphMarket Projects section of the site.
  • Share your entire breeding plan. It will include all public pairings.
  • Create Offspring Groups from the pairings as females ovulate. From here you can later easily generate the offspring, which can then be turned into listings.

The best part is that Breeding Plans are available to all MorphMarket users free of charge. Members get extra benefits with no new costs, such as the ability for other users to browse, search and get alerts on their project activity.

Upcoming improvements include:

  • Breeder Waitlists for buyers to engage sellers on potential offspring
  • Recording breeding activity such as pairing events, locks, and follicle sizes
  • Multiple breeding plans

Learn more about Breeding Plans by watching the video above and by reading our support article or try it out right now!

Genetic Testing Now Available!

Exactly a month ago, we announced our partnership with Rare Genetics Inc. to bring you reliable and affordable genetic testing for your reptiles.

Great news -- IT'S READY!

Click here to see currently available tests, prices, FAQ's and to place orders.

This testing is useful in so many ways:

  • Save years of time by immediately proving your breeders
  • Increase your sales by selling Pos Hets as 100% Het
  • Verify that your purchases were advertised correctly
  • Discover genes in your lines that you didn't even know about
  • Distinguish between incomplete dominants like Asphalt/Gravel/YB in the future
  • Find out if your pet is a boy or girl

Please let us know if you have any questions not answered on the FAQ's.

Genetic Testing! What the Het?

MorphMarket is excited to bring you a new technology that is going to change the industry: genetic testing for your animals to determine their sex, genetic traits, and other characteristics.

Rare Genetics Inc. (RGI) is a new company that has developed genetic tests for reptiles that are reliable and affordable. These tests from RGI will be available for purchase through MorphMarket in a matter of weeks.

With a small piece of shed from your reptile, RGI's tests can tell you if the reptile is male or female, or if it contains certain morphs. This means you can prove out your possible het animals without taking years to grow them up and breed them. It can also confirm incomplete dominant traits such as Asphalt/Gravel/Yellow Belly.

When is this useful?

  • Test your offspring so you can sell them as 100% Het instead of Pos Het
  • Test the animals you buy to verify they were accurately advertised
  • Test your breeders to find out if they have genes you didn't even know about
  • Test your pet to know if it's a boy or girl

Join the Waiting List now to be first in line for this service and receive updates on its availability!

As of today tests already developed include:

  • Ball Pythons: Morph Identification for Clown, Piebald, and Lavender Albino
  • Ball Pythons: Sex Determination
  • Colubrids: Sex Determination
  • Venomous: Sex Determination

3-5 additional Ball Python morph tests are planned to be added in the next few weeks, with more to come every month.

RGI has sold these tests in the past in limited supply, but moving forward they will no longer be selling directly to the public. These tests will be available through MorphMarket. Click here to get updates and early access.

500 Morphpedia Articles

Since the initial release of Morphpedia back in October, our team has been hard at work to bring as much information as possible together for the whole community to explore and learn.

We recently hit the 500 Published Articles mark, which is an amazing milestone. At this point 21 categories are represented, and we have covered about 50% of the traits listed in our marketplace.

This wouldn’t have been possible with the outstanding amount of help that has been contributed so far by members of our community, we are extremely grateful for their assistance in our mission.

Along the way we have gotten input from breeders from all around the world, to hear their first-hand stories about the history of traits. We have also connected with expert geneticists from multiple fields to help incorporate a whole wealth of information to introduce features such as "Complexes" and "Tags" to help herpers understand how traits interact with one another.

We've added a new resource to educate buyers on buying safely, whether on MorphMarket or elsewhere. You'll find this article on Safe Purchasing in the Learning Center with many others.

This is an expanded version of the older "Researching Sellers" article. It's been a background project for at least a year now!

Yes, we know it's quite long. We will reorganize content later to make it more digestible.

We will eventually release a similar document with best practices for Sellers protecting themselves.

This content includes feedback from many folks over the years. There are too many to recognize, but we are grateful!

Morphpedia is a new knowledge base of herp traits, genes and localities. In the last two months we've added 192 published articles. This week our team released version 1.2.

11 Categories in Development

The initial launch focused on Ball Pythons, but now we've really opened things up and have 11 categories "in development". This means that we've auto-generated trait articles from the MorphMarket database, but are editing and enhancing those articles in our forums before publishing them. We need your help to finish them out, so please come and contribute photos and information.

Meta Tags

Tags, like "Leucism" are used to group related traits and facilitate your exploration and learning. This week we added two special tags: "Issues" and "Complexes". They're special because they're automatically generated based on other data.

  • Issues - a tag to quickly see all traits with some kind of documented issue.
  • Complexes - a tag to quickly see all traits which are identified in a genetic complex.

Relative Availability Trends

Availability is our term that refers to the supply of animals for sale on MorphMarket with this trait. Relative availability indicates how this trait ranked against other traits at that time. For example, a value of 75 would mean that this trait had an equal or higher availability than 75% of all available traits.

Most traits now have relative availability graphs which show how availability has trended over the past 5 years.

We've haven't explored the results completely, but here are a few interesting availability trends we saw in Ball Pythons:

Some details:

  • We do not yet combine data across aliases of a trait. For example, in Morphpedia we recognize Coral Glow as an alias to Banana, but the market data is not yet combined in this way.
  • Data may be less reliable prior to the date these genes were added to our marketplace. While our site attempts to automatically tag older ads, it cannot do so in all cases. But this will improve over time.

Remember that these graphs show supply, not price or demand. Also, data always require interpretation. It's up to you to figure out what it means.

Conclusion

There's a lot of exciting projects going on at MorphMarket right now, and we couldn't be more pleased with how Morphpedia is going so far. But we need your help! Please visit Morphpedia.com to learn about these amazing animals and to contribute your knowledge to the community.

Morphpedia 1.1

Morphpedia is a new knowledge base of herp traits, genes and localities. In early October, we launched version 1.0. In the past few weeks, we quietly released version 1.1 which includes new features and have also published many more articles.

Morphpedia now contains almost 150 published articles. We've also added support for multiple categories and now have over a dozen Reticulated Python traits.

Other recently added features:

  • Better controls for exploring traits, including:
    • Searching by gene
    • Searching by gene complexes
    • A slider for origin date
    • Links from the trait index in the marketplace back into Morphpedia articles
  • Availability data to show how common a trait is in the marketplace
  • Symmetrical linking of related traits
  • Footnotes, because references are important!
  • Ability to share to Facebook - so you can help spread the word about this resource, and get more folks contributing

Upcoming features:

  • Graph showing availability date over time for each trait
  • Tags generated from complexes and issues
  • Improved related trait data by incorporating gene complexes

Find Morphpedia on our website or at www.morphpedia.com along with videos that explain how it works. Please come and contribute knowledge to the community about your favorite genes.

We didn't feel right having all the fun this weekend at NARBC Tinley because we know that many of you can't make it. So we prepared a little treat.

We've just launched Morphpedia. It's our new community-powered knowledge base for herp traits, and it's now live.

We announced this project a few weeks ago and explained why we created it.

  • Below are two videos which give an overview of how to use it and explain how you can contribute to it.
  • You can read a lot more about it in this document, and this will grow over time as well.
  • Please direct questions and comments into the Morphpedia discussion forum.

You can access Morphpedia from the menus or footer or via morphpedia.com.

We hope you enjoy it, and we look forward to your contributions as well.
