The Butter ball python is an incomplete-dominant mutation known for reducing melanin and enhancing yellow pigmentation. Individuals can range in color from rich yellows and tans to lighter creams and browns.
History
The Butter morph originated from Mark & Kim Bell of Reptile Industries and was first proven genetic in 2001. Initially, Butter and Lesser were believed to be two names for the same gene, simply founded by different breeders at different times. Both morphs produced blue-eyed leucistics when bred to one another and were categorized together as part of the Blue-Eyed Leucistic (BEL) complex, alongside Mojave, Russo, Mystic, Phantom, Mocha, and Special.
In May 2025, Rare Genetic Inc (RGI) released results confirming that Butter and Lesser are genetically distinct traits
“The Butter Ball came From Mark & Kim Bell.
Butters were first proven genetic in 2001. However, it was several years until the super-butter, a blue-eyed-leucistic was produced. Genetically butters are considered a separate line of the same mutation as the lesser. (The main difference would be if the lesser line is carrying some gene linked to the platinum.)” [2]
