    About

Snowflake is a trait where an animal displays white spots that initially start small to non-existent and bloom or grow as the animal ages. The pattern that forms and blooms is usually somewhat transparent depending on the layer that develops within the chromatophore.

The gene attached to white patterning, similar to what we see from Pin and Harley, the gene then blooms with age as the white color and pattern grow into the animal.

    History

White spots is the Snowflake trait. The name comes from the original description used for Leachies by Philippe De Vosjoli and was identified and adopted by AC to describe when he noticed this trait in his collection, which originated from Repashy stock. [1]

    Appearance

    Body

Often the animal doesn’t exhibit more than a few scales of white that can grow quite large by the time they hit 2 and it stops progressing.

    Controversy

This is one of the only epistatic traits we have found that adhere to the more common definition of epistasis. It is a prime example of; “if gene A is present then form snowflakes , if not then remain silent. As noted by AC he has bred this trait to stack it over the years and has observed a ceiling to the amount of progression that develops. However, there seems to be another variant that does develop an extreme amount of blooming x10 as much in some cases. This new variant was noticed around 2012 and has started propagating throughout the hobby. More extensive breeding is needed to determine if this is an allelic variant or if there is a new gene responsible for the new yet similar variant which we have proposed white plague, yeti, or wampa if a new variant is found.
