History
The Halloween Masks were first pioneered in the late 90s by Albey Scholl of Albey’s Too Cool Reptiles when he began working with an unusual gecko he acquired. After many years of line breeding and proving out the head pattern traits, the project was turned over to Paul Allen of Bright Albino and then to other various breeders, such as Brittney Gougeon of PacHerp, and Ryan Hauser of Retribution Reptiles.[1]
In 1997 at the National Reptile Breeders’ Expo in Orlando Albey (Albey’s “Too Cool” Reptiles) purchased the foundation female for the Halloween Mask line from Ron Tremper. This particular female was on it’s course to be sold to an exporter shipping to Japan when things went south. He was caught smuggling reptiles out of Canada and therefore had backed out of the group that included this original from Tremper. Now, without a buyer, Tremper put this gecko among others on his table at the National Reptile Breeders’ Expo. At the show Albey selected this unusual female from a group of strongly patterned jungles. The female was a slow grower so he didn’t breed her until the second year. Believe it or not he bred her to a tangerine male and then selectively bred the offspring until he turned them over to Paul Allen in 2007-'08. Paul sold the first ones released to Brittany from PacHerp and the rest is history. Not too many pure line Halloween Masks are left in existence. Some groups of them have already been subjected to very heavy inbreeding causing other issues. Hopefully through the combined effort of a few breeders this line can be saved in the future. [2]

Halloween Masks hatch out with dark black patterns on their body and heads and develop into juveniles with extremely bold head patterns and unusual body markings. Their bold traits continue to develop and mature all the way into adulthood. Sometimes they are very dark with lavender around their bold markings and tail. Top quality Halloween Masks will change color from a very dark semi-melanistic coloration to a vibrant yellow/bold coloration depending on their mood, temperature, and other conditions. [3]
