Leatherbacks have a very soft, small scales along their backs that gives them a overall smoother feel while being handled. This can also be seen along their rear legs also.
American Leatherbacks tend to be less smooth than their Italian counterparts, with a fine amount of rough scales.

A form of incomplete dominant leather that popped out in italy. It has pretty consistent scale reduction and is quite a bit smoother uniformly and consistently than american leather.
Incomplete dominant leather animals are actually visual hets. They are the heterozygous form of silkback. Silkback is the homozygous/super form of leatherback. Silks lack scales completely, with most retaining pseudoscales that tend to develop as the animal grows.

A truly recessive form of leatherback, first produced in 2004 by Phantom Dragons Inc. The animals are smooth dorsolaterally, with almost normal scalation over the rest of the body. When bred together, these animals do not produce silkback dragons, the entire clutch is visual phantom leather. It works like any other recessive genetic heritability wise.
When you have an animal that expresses incomplete dominant leather and phantom leather, this is a true Microleather animal. They are extremely smooth, between that of a silkback and an incomplete dominant leather. [1]
