These are overlapping spots that create a cluster on the animal and have proven to be a heritable attribute of the trait. We have even observed clusters shaped like the number 5 and her offspring had clusters that made the shape of a 5, 6 and J in several offspring. This seems to work similarly to how birthmarks work in humans. [1]
